10 Best Waterfalls and Gorges in Slovenia

Slovenia's water landscapes take many forms. Alpine streams cut narrow limestone slots, waterfalls drop from hanging valleys, and turquoise rivers run through smooth gorges. Managed paths reach many sites, though spray, high water, rockfall or winter ice can close some of the most dramatic sections.

Check official access before driving to a trailhead. Stay out of gorges during heavy rain, and don't go behind a waterfall when barriers or ice make the route unsafe.

Walk Vintgar Gorge

Walkways follow the Radovna River between steep walls toward the Šum waterfall area. One-way circulation and shuttle arrangements manage visitor numbers in this narrow gorge.

Check the entry direction and transport plan before you go. Wear shoes with good grip and start early. Stay behind barriers and keep moving through narrow sections of the walkway.

Hike to Kozjak Waterfall

From Kobarid, a forest path and suspended bridge lead to Veliki Kozjak, which falls into a dark rock chamber. The last stretch is narrow and wet.

Enter through the managed entrance, stay out of the protected pool and follow any one-way rules. Add the Kobarid Historical Trail for a longer day out.

Walk behind Peričnik

Peričnik has two cascades in the Vrata Valley. In safe summer conditions, the established path goes behind the lower fall, where spray is heavy.

Wear waterproofs and shoes with good grip. Keep off the path behind the fall when it is closed or icy, and stay clear of falling ice in winter. Continue farther into Vrata only with a mountain plan.

Explore the Tolmin Gorges

The Tolminka and Zadlaščica meet in steep gorges at the southern edge of Triglav National Park. A managed circuit runs on stairs and bridges below the Devil's Bridge and near a thermal spring.

Check the route direction and closures before setting out. Rock gets slippery after rain, and high water can affect lower sections. Leave enough time to complete the loop before closing.

Climb to Savica Waterfall

Savica forms an A-shaped cascade above Lake Bohinj. A maintained stairway climbs through the forest to the waterfall. The route is short but steep, and busiest in the middle of the day.

Use the official path and viewing area, and don't climb toward the source. The steps can be wet. Pair the visit with time at the lake or a longer walk instead of making the drive only for a quick photograph.

Visit Rinka Waterfall

Rinka falls from a high cliff at the head of Logar Valley, where the Savinja's visible course begins. A short path leads to the base area. Other trails nearby continue into demanding mountain terrain.

Stay clear of the fall line when conditions are freezing, and follow road and parking rules in the valley. Higher trails require proper mountain equipment and a weather plan.

Walk to Boka Waterfall

Boka emerges from a Karst spring high above the Soča Valley and is one of Slovenia's most powerful waterfalls. The trail climbs to viewpoints; the base is unstable.

Choose a signed viewpoint suited to the conditions and keep away from loose edges. Spring flow is strong, and the ground can be wet. Don't scramble toward the outlet without specialist knowledge.

Hike to Virje Waterfall

Near Bovec, the Glijun stream runs over a mossy rock face into a clear pool at Virje. The approach is short. Visit early or late in the day for a quieter experience.

Use designated parking and paths, and follow current swimming restrictions. The spring water is cold and the habitat is fragile. Stay on the paths instead of trampling the banks to avoid other visitors.

Walk the Martuljek waterfall trail

The Martuljek stream runs beneath the Špik group and drops over two major waterfalls. The lower fall is easier to reach. Beyond it, the trail toward the upper cascade enters steeper mountain terrain.

After storms, check the bridges and route status. Wear mountain footwear and turn back if protected sections exceed your experience. Watch for rockfall and wet roots along the trail.

Descend Sušec Canyon with a guide

Sušec's waterfalls, pools and slides make for a canyoning route with jumps and rappels. Conditions and professional management determine whether it is suitable for first-timers.
