Škocjan or Postojna: which Slovenia cave should you visit?

A lit visitor path crosses above underground water in Škocjan Caves.

Compare Škocjan’s underground canyon with Postojna’s train-and-walk tour, including stairs, cold conditions and how to choose one cave visit.

Choose Škocjan if you want to walk above an underground river canyon. Choose Postojna if the cave train and decorated chambers appeal more. Both visits are guided, with different ways of moving through the caves.

If you have time for only one, decide by the kind of visit you want and the amount of walking your group can manage. Choose the route that best suits your group.

Why choose Škocjan?

The guided route crosses above the Reka River within a large subterranean canyon. From the path and bridge, you can look up at the chamber walls and down toward the river.

The official tour description explains the longer circuit and earlier exit options. Check which version runs on your date. Do not choose a departure solely by its start time if the walking commitment matters to your group.

Expect cool, damp conditions. Wear shoes with grip, carry a warm layer and follow the photography rules. If heights make you uncomfortable, discuss the canyon crossing with the park before booking.

Why choose Postojna?

Postojna's train takes visitors into the cave system before a guided walking section. It suits someone who wants the railway as part of the experience, with time to see cave formations along a managed visitor route.

The official Postojna tour information gives about 90 minutes for the standard visit and a cave temperature around 10°C. Bring a layer even on a hot day, and arrive in time for boarding.

The presence of a train does not remove the walking. If mobility is a concern, ask about the current slope and assistance arrangements before purchasing. Confirm that the full route suits everyone in your group.

Can you visit both in one day?

You can investigate a two-cave day by comparing actual departure times and transport. Leave a generous gap for the first tour to finish, the surface walk back and the journey onward. Plan food before committing to another fixed entry.

For most first visits, one cave with an unhurried surface walk makes a more comfortable day. Doing both makes sense when you are specifically interested in the contrast and have arranged the logistics around it.

For other underground experiences, our Slovenia caves guide includes lake passages and former mines. Read each site's access conditions separately; a standard show-cave ticket provides no access to other underground routes.
