Samaria Gorge cuts through the White Mountains in a dramatic descent from the high plateau to the Libyan Sea. The full crossing is about 16 kilometres and ends at Agia Roumeli, a coastal village with no road connection. As of 17 October 2026, the park’s official ticket page reports that the gorge is closed from both entrances pending inspections. Check the live status before planning a hike.

The crossing to Agia Roumeli
When the trail reopens, the crossing leads from Xyloskalo through forest, streams and sheer-sided passages to the coast. One of its most dramatic moments comes at the Iron Gates, where the gorge squeezes between towering rock walls. The long descent over uneven terrain makes this a full-day hike, but the changing landscape—from mountain forest to the bright coastline—gives the walk a real sense of journey. From Agia Roumeli, ferries connect with coastal villages such as Chora Sfakion and Sougia, where buses continue toward Chania. Check the current park ticket and opening information and ANENDYK ferry schedule together before choosing your route.

The gorge opens seasonally and may close at short notice when conditions change. Make sure the park is open before setting out, and leave a margin between the walk and the ferry. There are no shops inside the gorge, so carry the food and water you need for the day.
