Hike to Preikestolen from Stavanger

Preikestolen plateau.

Climb to Norway’s famous Pulpit Rock for sweeping Lysefjord views, with a simple guide to the trail and transport from Stavanger.

Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock, is a broad stone platform high above Lysefjord. From its edge, the fjord runs between steep mountain walls far below, a view that makes the climb feel worth every step. The trail is about eight kilometres round trip and takes around four to five hours, so plan a full day from Stavanger and leave time to enjoy the plateau before heading back.

Getting there from Stavanger

The bus from Stavanger takes about 50 minutes to Preikestolen Parking, where the trail begins. Bus departures vary by season; book ahead and check the return journey when you choose a ticket. Return tickets are tied to the same operator, so plan to use the same company in both directions.

If you’re driving, paid parking is available at the trailhead. In busy periods it can fill, so check the current parking information before setting out.

The climb to the plateau

The trail crosses forest, wet ground and stone stairways, with an overall climb of about 500 metres. It is a varied walk rather than a single relentless ascent, passing through changing terrain before the landscape opens toward the fjord. At the top, take in the scale of the water and cliffs from the plateau. Conditions can shift in the mountains, so check the forecast and current trail advice before you go, and keep back from the exposed edge.

For another ambitious Norwegian hike, compare the P2 and P3 starting points for Trolltunga.
