Choose PR 1.2 from Achada do Teixeira if you want to reach Pico Ruivo and return to the same trailhead. Choose PR 1 from Pico do Areeiro if the mountain traverse itself is the reason for your visit. Both reach Madeira's highest summit, but they need different transport plans and reservations.
Book for the route you intend to walk: a reservation for the short walk near Areeiro does not automatically cover the full traverse. Arrange transport to match.

How the two routes compare
| Decision | PR 1 from Pico do Areeiro | PR 1.2 from Achada do Teixeira |
|---|---|---|
| Walking style | Mountain traverse with tunnels and exposed stairs | Summit walk with a return along the same path |
| Getting back | Arrange transport from the exit | Return to your starting point |
| Main reason to choose it | Walking across the central massif | Reaching Pico Ruivo on a shorter outing |
| Booking | Full-traverse reservation | PR 1.2 reservation |
Visit Madeira lists PR 1.2 as 2.8 kilometres each way. Give yourself room for breaks and changing weather when estimating your finish time. The official PR 1.2 description is the starting point for checking the route.
When PR 1.2 makes sense
This is the simpler choice for a group with one car, or for someone who wants a summit walk without committing to the longer traverse. Follow the marked path toward Casa de Abrigo and the summit, then retrace your route to Achada do Teixeira.
Short distance does not remove mountain exposure. Carry a waterproof layer and something warm, and consider whether everyone in the group is comfortable walking when views disappear into cloud. Turn back if conditions deteriorate.
View in GoExploringWhen to choose the Areeiro traverse
PR 1 has carved stairs, tunnels and sustained mountain scenery. It deserves a day planned around walking. The full traverse currently continues one way beyond Pedra Rija toward Pico Ruivo, with the exit down PR 1.2 to Achada do Teixeira. Confirm this arrangement on the official PR 1 page before booking.
Agree on a pickup location and timing with your driver. Download the booking and route information before leaving your accommodation, and carry a light for the tunnels. Leave the rest of the day free; nearby trailheads can lead to long walks.
Reservations and a weather backup
Use SIMplifica for the applicable timed reservation and payment. Check both the trail status and mountain forecast again before departure; an earlier booking does not override a closure. Keep another day flexible if Pico Ruivo is central to your Madeira trip.
