The Nærøyfjord is a journey into one of Norway’s most dramatic landscapes. Mountains rise steeply from the water, waterfalls thread down their sides and small settlements appear at the few places where the shore opens up. A cruise links Flåm and Gudvangen in around two hours one way, passing through Aurlandsfjord before the passage narrows into the inner fjord. From the boat, the scale of the cliffs and the quiet of the water are the whole experience.

Choose your starting point
You can sail in either direction. Start in Flåm for Aurlandsfjord first, or in Gudvangen to see the route in reverse. The scenery unfolds differently depending on where you begin, but both directions bring you through the same narrow fjord between towering walls. Choose the end that fits your plans, then arrange transport back if you need to return to your starting point.
Is the shuttle included?
The cruise and return bus may be sold together or separately, so check what your ticket includes. Match the boat and bus times when booking your return; getting the connection right lets you enjoy the sailing without worrying about how to get back through the valley.
View in GoExploringWinter sailings and stops along the way
The cruise runs year-round, though winter weather can change the route at short notice. The boat may instead sail out and back from Flåm, with a bus connecting Flåm and Gudvangen.
If you plan to get off at an intermediate village, book that stop in advance; the boat will not stop there otherwise. Check the operator’s latest timetable and route before travelling, especially in winter.
