Besseggen ridge hike: choose your direction and boat

Plan the Besseggen ridge walk above Lake Gjende, compare both directions and fit the boat and parking shuttle into your day.

Besseggen is one of Norway’s great mountain days: a long walk over a dramatic ridge, with Lake Gjende far below and wide Jotunheimen views opening around you. The famous stretch rises between Gjende and Bessvatnet, two lakes whose contrasting colors make the narrow crest unforgettable. A boat across Gjende helps determine which way you walk, so choose the direction that fits the kind of day you want.

Choose your direction

Starting at Memurubu means the boat journey comes first and you walk back to Gjendesheim. The ridge climb comes during the walk, and you finish on foot at the place you started the day. This is the popular choice for a reason: once you leave the boat, the day is yours to meet the mountain at your own pace.

You can also walk from Gjendesheim toward Memurubu and take the boat back. In that direction, the sailing schedule sets your finish time, so check the departure and what happens if you arrive late before booking.

A demanding day on the ridge

The route is about 14 kilometres and takes around seven to eight hours. It is a sustained mountain hike, with steep sections and exposed scrambling on the ridge. The effort is rewarded by a feeling of space that is hard to find on a shorter walk: lakes on either side, peaks in every direction and the satisfaction of crossing the mountain on foot. It suits experienced, fit walkers who are comfortable with heights.

Getting to Gjende

Drivers can use Reinsvangen parking and the shuttle toward the trailhead and boat. Check current parking and shuttle arrangements with Gjendepark, and book the boat directly with Gjendebåtene.

Check local conditions before setting out, since weather can change the plan for an exposed ridge. For another Norwegian day outdoors, see our Nærøyfjord cruise and shuttle guide.
