From Mestia, you can walk toward a glacier and return to the same guesthouse, or spend a day exploring the medieval tower villages of Upper Svaneti. Farther along the valley, an overnight stay in Ushguli gives you time in the settlements after the day visitors leave.
Allow several nights for Svaneti if you can. With arrival, a hike and departure on consecutive days, there is little room to change plans when the weather turns.
Start with Mestia, then choose your walking days
Use your arrival day to walk around Mestia and ask locally about trail conditions. Tower villages are inhabited places, so check before entering courtyards or photographing residents. Arrange cultural activities through a host who can explain what is available during your stay.
For a shorter mountain outing, consider the Chalaadi Glacier approach. The Koruldi Lakes involve a longer uphill day; compare the actual trailhead and elevation gain when someone quotes a walking time. Check how much of the climb you will do on foot if a vehicle transfer is included. Georgia Travel's trekking overview helps distinguish the routes.
Stay on established approaches and keep clear of glacier ice and unstable edges. You can see the glacier without setting foot on the ice.
Spend time in Ushguli
Ushguli is a group of mountain settlements, and the tower houses are part of the cultural landscape protected within the Upper Svaneti UNESCO site. Take time in the village lanes, where homes and religious sites sit alongside the pasture.
An overnight stay lets you separate village exploring from the walk toward Shkhara Glacier. Confirm road conditions and the return journey with your accommodation before leaving Mestia. If you want to enter a church or tower, ask about access and dress expectations locally.
Decide whether to add the Mestia–Ushguli trek
Day hikes work well when you want one base and flexibility. The village-to-village trek suits walkers who want consecutive mountain days and guesthouse nights. It also requires more preparation: accommodation, a river-crossing decision and transport after the final stage.
Read our Mestia to Ushguli trek guide before choosing between them. Book the walking stages first, then allow time for arrival and departure around the trek.
Plan for the mountains
For higher walks, look at summer into early autumn, then check local conditions for your dates. Snow and storms can still change the plan. Bring waterproofs and warm layers, and ask your host how the trails have been recently.
Keep enough flexibility to swap a high walk for a village day. Confirm the next day's route and transport before dinner, when your host still has time to contact a driver or guide.
