Mestia to Ushguli trek: stages, guesthouses and river decisions

A stone tower and village lane in Ushguli, Svaneti.

Prepare for the Mestia to Ushguli trek in Svaneti, with a four-day stage outline, guesthouse planning, the Adishi river crossing and return transport.

The Mestia to Ushguli trek usually takes four walking days, with nights in village guesthouses. Alongside the accommodation bookings, you will need local advice about the river crossing after Adishi. Check the exact route when comparing stage distances and walking times.

Leave some time in Svaneti before and after the trek. An arrival delay or poor mountain weather should not force you onto the first stage unprepared.

How the four walking days fit together

The route normally progresses from Mestia toward Zhabeshi, then Adishi, across toward the Khalde or Iprali area, and finally Ushguli. The regional route description sets out a version of these stages. Other variations change overnight stops and trail choices, so check the route with your host or guide.

Use this outline for planning, and take a map and track for your chosen route on the walk. Compare elevation and terrain alongside kilometres. Consecutive mountain days can feel harder than separate day hikes from one base.

Reserve guesthouses around the actual route

Book each night once the stage plan is clear. Confirm meals, payment and whether the host can help contact the next guesthouse. If you want to walk with a lighter pack, arrange and confirm a luggage transfer separately.

Carry enough food and water for the walking day. Check what your hosts can prepare before relying on a packed lunch. Keep accommodation names and phone numbers offline along with your route.

Treat the Adishi river as a decision point

The route crosses a glacial river after Adishi. Conditions change, so an old trip report will not tell you whether it is safe to cross that day. Ask locally about the crossing before leaving the guesthouse and follow the advice of a qualified guide.

Horse-assisted crossings can sometimes be arranged locally. You still need advice on whether conditions are safe for the crossing. Do not attempt a ford to stay on schedule. If conditions are unsuitable, wait or arrange a different plan with your host or guide.

Getting back from Ushguli

Arrange the Ushguli pick-up before the last day and keep a contact number. If you are staying in the village, confirm the following morning's connection instead. Leave space before a long-distance bus or flight.

For a trip with fewer commitments, compare the day hikes in our Mestia and Upper Svaneti guide. Before starting the trek, reconfirm the high-pass conditions, overnight bookings and river plan together.
