Walk the Nakasendō from Magome to Tsumago

The historic post town of Magome along the Nakasendō in Japan at dusk.

Follow an atmospheric stretch of Japan’s old Nakasendō through forest and post towns, with a simple overview of the route, transport and luggage forwarding.

The Nakasendō once linked Kyoto and Edo, and the walk between Magome and Tsumago brings that history to life on a manageable day out. The route is about eight kilometres and takes around three hours at a relaxed pace, through forest, small settlements and the beautifully preserved post towns at either end.

The walk between the post towns

Magome to Tsumago has less uphill walking than the reverse direction, though you can choose either end to suit your plans. This is one section of the historic road rather than a multi-day trek, with a mix of forest paths and occasional paved stretches. Keep in mind that searches for “Nakasendō” may show much longer routes.

Getting between Magome and Tsumago

The bus network is limited, so check the schedule for your walking date and the connection from your finish town. Nagiso is the nearest rail access to Tsumago. An overnight nearby can make it easier to enjoy both towns without watching the clock.

Luggage and trail information

Luggage forwarding is available on some dates between the towns. Check where and when to drop off and collect bags, and carry what you need for the walk with you. Trail and bear notices can change, so take a look at local information before setting out.
