Krimml’s waterfalls thunder down the mountainside in three stages, dropping 380 metres through a forested valley. From the first viewpoint, the spray and sound make the scale of the falls immediate; higher up, the trail brings you alongside the water as it plunges from one level to the next. You can keep the visit easy with a short walk to the lower falls or climb farther for a fuller sense of the cascade.

How far to walk
The lower waterfall is a short walk from the car park. From there, the trail climbs through a series of viewpoints toward the upper falls; the full path is about four kilometres one way. Each viewpoint gives the waterfall a different scale, from the force of the lower drop to the wider view across the valley. Turn back whenever you have had your fill of the climb.
The cascades send spray across parts of the trail, and the ground can be wet. Wear footwear suited to an uphill walk.
If you only visit the lower viewpoint, you still get a close encounter with the water and a sense of how the falls dominate the valley. The longer climb brings you alongside the successive drops, where the river seems to gather force again at every turn. Pick the version of the walk that suits your day, and let the sound of the falls set the pace.
