Kawah Ijen is a night hike into a volcanic landscape that changes completely with the light. The trail rises from Paltuding in darkness; at the rim, dawn reveals the vast crater lake and the rugged outline of the surrounding peaks. Some visitors also hope to see the blue fire, a natural glow from burning sulfur gases deeper in the crater. It is a different route below the rim, and access can change with volcanic conditions.

The hike to the crater rim
The ascent from Paltuding is about three kilometres each way. Reaching the rim is a rewarding hike in its own right: from the high edge, the crater and its lake open up beneath you as the first light spreads across East Java. The blue fire requires a separate descent toward the gas vents in darkness. Tours may only go as far as the rim, so check which route is currently permitted before booking.
Current access and conditions
Access can change with volcanic activity and local restrictions. Check MAGMA Indonesia and the current visitor notice before you travel, including any entry or health requirements. A blue-fire sighting is never guaranteed.
