Évora and Alentejo: ancient stones, village walks and culture

The columns of the Roman Temple in Évora.

Plan an Évora and Alentejo stay with historic streets, Almendres megaliths and Monsaraz, plus European Capital of Culture 2027 information.

Spend a day walking through Évora before heading into the Alentejo countryside for prehistoric stones and hilltop villages. Allow separate days for those outings, with time to explore between journeys. Once outside the city, check distances and arrange transport.

If you want to attend an event in Évora and Alentejo's European Capital of Culture 2027 programme, start with the calendar. Choose the particular event you want to attend, then fit the rest of the trip around its location.

Walk Évora before driving into the countryside

Begin with a city day around the Roman Temple and the surrounding streets. If you want to enter churches or the Capela dos Ossos, check each site's access separately. Look up the opening times of any buildings you want to enter along the walk.

Leave space for a local meal without putting every stop on a timetable. Ask about regional food and performances when planning your evening. The municipal tourism routes can help you link the places you want to see.

Almendres takes you into the prehistoric landscape outside Évora. The municipality's megalithic interpretation information puts the stone enclosure and other nearby monuments in context.

Confirm current access and the approach before travelling. Arrange a guided visit if you want help understanding the sites and navigating between them. Wear shoes for uneven ground, bring water and leave the stones untouched. Arrange transport between sites if you want to visit several rural monuments.

Add Monsaraz for a different day

Give Monsaraz its own outing so you have time for the village lanes and castle area, with views across Alentejo from the hilltop. Combine it with another activity only after checking the actual journey and opening arrangements.

If your priority is a long walk on the coast, use our Portugal hiking guide to compare the Fishermen's Trail. That is a different part of Alentejo and needs a separate base and route plan.

Use the 2027 programme to choose dates

The official Évora 2027 site explains the cultural programme's regional scope. Check the venue as well as the date; an Alentejo event may take you beyond Évora. Book accommodation and transport around the confirmed event you want.

Look at spring and autumn dates for rural walks. In summer, avoid the hottest hours. Check local fire and access restrictions. Before leaving for a rural site, confirm the return journey and whether you need to bring lunch and drinking water.
