High above Werfen, a world of ice hides inside the mountain. The approach itself is part of the adventure: climb into the high alpine landscape, ride the cable car and enter the cave with a guide. Inside, enormous frozen formations and dark chambers make the outside world feel very far away. The outing takes around three hours and includes about 1,400 steps, so it suits visitors ready for a substantial climb.

Tickets and the mountain approach
Book through the official visitor page. An online ticket has a 30-minute arrival window at the visitor centre; plan the journey to Werfen and the transfer up the mountain around that slot. Tickets include the cable car and guided cave tour.
The visit combines mountain walking, the cable car and the guided cave tour. Allow around three hours on site, in addition to travel to and from Werfen; arriving at the visitor centre is only the beginning of the climb.
Inside the ice cave
Inside, the guided route climbs and descends roughly 1,400 steps through ice formations and vast caverns. The cave stays close to freezing even in summer, so warm layers and sturdy shoes make the experience more comfortable. Moving from the bright mountain outside into the cool, echoing chambers is a dramatic change, and each cavern reveals another shape carved by ice over time.
The cave is open seasonally. Check the current opening dates and access conditions before travelling, especially if you’re coming from Salzburg.
