Dubrovnik’s walls make the Old Town feel like a place you can read from above. The nearly two-kilometre circuit looks down on terracotta rooftops, narrow streets and the Adriatic, then turns toward the open sea beyond the stone defenses. Towers and steep stairways punctuate the walk, revealing a different angle at every turn. Take your time: the views are as much a part of the visit as the fortifications themselves.

The walk along the walls
The circuit is about two kilometres, with repeated stair climbs on exposed stone. Minčeta Tower rises above the northern side of the walls and offers a striking vantage over the city. As the path rounds the seaward edge, the open water and massive masonry bring Dubrovnik’s maritime past into focus; on the landward side, the Old Town’s close-packed streets appear almost like a map beneath you.
Tickets and Lovrjenac Fortress
View in GoExploringBuy from the official City Walls webshop and check the date and entry conditions. The walls ticket is valid for one circuit with no re-entry, and it also includes Lovrjenac Fortress, whose separate position across the inlet gives you a fresh perspective back toward the walled city. A ticket for Lovrjenac alone requires an additional payment to enter the walls. Guided tours are optional; confirm whether admission is included in the tour price.
When to go
The walls are exposed, and the stone steps can feel demanding in the heat. Check the current opening hours before you go and choose a time that leaves room to walk the full circuit at a comfortable pace.
The route has difficult access for visitors with mobility needs, so contact the visitor team before booking if this may affect your visit. Explore the walls on the map, then see another Croatian walk in our Manita peć cave and approach hike guide.
