Hike to the crater of Mount Vesuvius

Rocky walls inside the Gran Cono crater of Vesuvius.

Climb the Gran Cono trail to the edge of Vesuvius, where volcanic slopes open to views across the Bay of Naples.

At the edge of the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius rises above the cities and coastline it has shaped for millennia. The Gran Cono trail climbs through dark ash and lapilli to the crater rim, where you can look into the volcano and out across the gulf. The walk begins at about 1,000 metres above sea level, so you arrive already high on the volcano’s flank.

Reserve the Gran Cono trail

Admission is for a timed entry and must be purchased online through the park’s authorized ticket seller. Book the crater walk before arranging transport up from Naples, Ercolano or Pompeii; a shuttle or tour may not include the park ticket. The park now provides mandatory accompaniment for visitor groups above 1,000 metres, so follow the current entry arrangements even if an older guide describes a self-guided walk.

A short walk into a vast crater

Sentiero 5 winds uphill over loose volcanic ash and lapilli before reaching the crater rim. From the path, the crater’s steep interior and the sweep of the Gulf of Naples give you two very different views in one visit. Access is limited to the marked visitor route; the northern and eastern rim remain outside the open area.

Getting there from Naples or Pompeii

The trailhead is above Ercolano, so transport is part of the outing. Compare the entry slot with your uphill transfer and return, whether you travel independently or join a guided day from Naples or Pompeii. Parking is managed separately from the park ticket, and severe weather can close the crater trail. Check the latest park alerts before travelling.

Pompeii and Herculaneum make fascinating companions to a day on Vesuvius, each revealing a different part of the region’s volcanic past. Explore our guide to archaeological sites in Italy to decide how to shape the rest of your trip.
