Walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing through New Zealand’s volcanic heart

Emerald Lakes on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

Cross Tongariro’s volcanic landscape past Red Crater and the Emerald Lakes, with a clear guide to the one-way shuttle, booking and seasons.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing threads through a landscape of volcanic peaks, steaming vents and brilliantly coloured lakes. Starting in the Mangatepōpō Valley, the trail climbs toward Red Crater, then descends past the Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake before dropping through the northern slopes to Ketetahi. It is a challenging full-day crossing through sacred mountain country, and its one-way route makes transport part of the plan.

Start in Mangatepōpō, finish at Ketetahi

The crossing is a one-way route between two trailheads, so most walkers use a shuttle. Summer parking at Mangatepōpō is not available to people doing the crossing. DOC recommends a free track booking for everyone and requires one if you use a shuttle or guided service; shuttle transport is booked separately. Check pickup and drop-off details when choosing your ride.

A summer walk or a winter alpine trip?

May to late October brings winter conditions that require alpine skills and equipment; outside that period, mountain weather can still change quickly. Check DOC’s current conditions and be realistic about the long climb, loose volcanic terrain and descent. If your experience is limited to summer trails, go with a guide or choose an easier walk such as Soda Springs.

Fires in Tongariro National Park in late 2025 left areas near the crossing start blackened, with native vegetation beginning to recover. Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro have placed a restorative rāhui over the affected land: stay on the track and leave the fire-damaged area undisturbed. The alpine lakes are also sacred; enjoy their colours from the trail and do not enter the water.

If the mountain conditions call for a different kind of adventure, explore the Waitomo cave options.
