Semuc Champey is one of those landscapes that seems almost impossible until you see it: a natural limestone bridge where the Cahabón River vanishes beneath the forest while turquoise pools gather above. The day brings together a steep viewpoint walk, rainforest and time in the water. Getting there is part of the adventure, too. The site is about 12 kilometres from Lanquín along a rough road that may call for a four-wheel-drive vehicle in the rainy season.
The viewpoint and the pools
The climb to the viewpoint rewards the effort with the view that defines Semuc Champey: bright pools stepping through the rainforest above the hidden river. From above, the limestone bridge and green canopy make the water look even more vivid. Then descend to cool off in the areas open to visitors and see the pools up close. The Cahabón itself runs powerfully beneath the bridge, so swimming is for the pools, not the river.

Many visitors arrange transport from Lanquín, often as part of a day trip. Packages may bundle the ride, park entry and other nearby activities, so compare what’s included and how much time you’ll have at the pools. Rain can affect the road and river conditions; follow local access advice on the day.
