Creux du Van is a vast natural amphitheatre carved into the Jura: sheer limestone cliffs curve around a high, open basin, and the horizon stretches across the surrounding countryside. The hike from Noiraigue makes a full day of it, climbing through forest before reaching the dramatic rim. The contrast is part of the reward: a shaded, steady ascent gives way to an immense open bowl of rock and sky.

The climb from Noiraigue
Expect a demanding circuit of roughly 14–15 kilometres, with about 800 metres of climbing. The 14 Contours is the steepest-feeling section, a sustained series of turns that leads up toward the plateau. Once the trail reaches the rim, the route follows the amphitheatre before looping back through the high pasture and forest. Route versions differ slightly, so follow one map for the whole walk and allow time to enjoy the views as well as the climb.

At the top, the forest opens onto the sweeping rim and the scale of the amphitheatre comes into view. The cliffs are exposed, so keep a safe distance from the edge, especially in wind or low visibility. Cows with calves graze in the area and can react aggressively to dogs, so leave dogs at home.
