For a short Carretera Austral trip, choose the section with the walks and water outings you most want to do. Chile's Route 7 crosses very different parts of Patagonia. Allow time to stay and explore along the way.
The Chilean tourism board describes a route of more than 1,200 kilometres, with some sections connected by ferry. Count the driving time and ferry connections as well as the kilometres.
Choose a northern section or a central Aysén base
A northern trip can centre on forest, fjords and the journey through the Pumalín area. A central Aysén trip can use the Coyhaique area as a starting point for outings toward Cerro Castillo or farther south to Lake General Carrera. Check the journey times for each option before deciding how many stops to include.
For limited time, choose a few overnight stops and stay longer at each. Compare the actual road and ferry connections before booking flights or a one-way rental. Ask the rental company about permitted roads and return arrangements.
Walk in Queulat or around Cerro Castillo
Queulat is known for its hanging glacier and forest setting. Check CONAF's current park information for open sectors and trails. Check the specific viewpoint trail you want to use, even when the park is open.
For a hike around Cerro Castillo, check the terrain and entry arrangements separately. Use the park's official information and check the specific trail you intend to walk. Keep a flexible day so low cloud or a closure does not force a poor decision.
Take to the water at the Marble Caves
The marble formations on Lake General Carrera are reached on locally organised water outings. Decide between a boat and a guided kayak trip based on conditions and your experience. Confirm where you will launch and what the operator does when wind prevents departure.
View in GoExploringAllow more than a single slot between long drives for the outing. A second night nearby gives you a chance to move it to another day. Ask operators about the next day's forecast before fixing your departure time.
Add Caleta Tortel only when the route allows it

Caleta Tortel's boardwalks are a reason to spend time in the southern part of the route. Check how its location fits the nights and fuel stops you have available. A southern detour can add more travel than its place on a small map suggests.
If planning your first road trip for the southern summer, confirm accommodation, ferries and trail access for your dates. Download navigation and keep fuel stops in your plan. Recheck the next connection while you still have service and avoid scheduling a long final drive immediately before your flight.
